This course is designed to benefit both the student with no training in studio art and the student desirous of perfecting basic skills. Classroom sessions serve to introduce basic techniques (life drawing, perspective, shading and so on) and to sum up the encounters that form the mainstay of the course. Activity in the field is geared to the discovery of Italian culture, from antiquity to the present day, by exploring human interaction, and the qualities of monuments and squares in the ideal setting of the eternal city. As the student scrutinizes the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the ruins of the Forum or the Spanish Steps, vendors and visitors, the act of drawing refines perceptions, and the notebook becomes a vehicle for reflections about civilization.
