Students design lighting for outdoor spaces between Accademia Italiana and TSH

An ambitious architectural project that has been designed together with The Social Hub, which, after two hotels in Florence and one in Bologna, is about to complete its first Roman site in the same complex of Accademia Italiana.

Rome, 19 July 2024

It has already been more than a year since Accademia Italiana moved its Rome headquarters to the former Dogana area in San Lorenzo with 2500 square meters dedicated to education, sustainability and creativity.

A hybrid structure of 21,000 square meters, which includes, in addition to the rooms, common areas open to the community, spaces for sports and co-working, meeting and event rooms where guests, students and professionals of all kinds can meet and exchange ideas. But also 10,000 square meters of public park returned to the city.

The synergy between Accademia Italiana and TSH is in continuous development, and it is with this in mind that the students of the two-year Interior Design and Product Design courses, led by lecturer Federico Ognibene and by Francesco Naldi and Jason Steere of The Social Hub, were asked to develop ideas for new lighting designs for the three adjacent spaces with a particular focus on development according to the pillars of the Dutch hotel chain, namely ‘conscious, fun, curious, bold, entrepreneurial’. This is how the design proposals for the square, the building in front of the Accademia and the arches under the railway were born.

ARCHES is a project that aims to create a dynamic lighting installation that embellishes the existing arches and whose aesthetic function is present both during the day and at night.

For the BUILDING B the students wanted to play with natural light by combining different colours of the skylight glass and creating pleasant and interesting artistic effects.

While the SQUARE project they wanted to create a relaxing ambience in which soft light in warm colours contrasts with the environment, representing a modern interpretation of urban space.
